Pop Culture Readathon: 90's Movies Edition

To help push me along with setting new reading goals for 2020 and amp up my book collection a bit, I decided to look for a reading challenge of sorts to keep me on track, which is essentially a community of people reading books based on given prompts.  When I stumbled across the Pop Culture Read-a-thon: 90's movie edition, I was sold, mainly because I absolutely adore the theme. Who knows? This might inspire a few movie nights as well.

This will be my first time attempting to participate in a read-a-thon or anything like it. Although I'm a little late to the party, I'm super excited about diving into it. Not only are the prompts nostalgic and full of so many of my personal favorite 90's films, but this read-a-thon was created by a black woman. There are also a few books that were on my radar or that I started reading that coincide with some of the prompts on the board.
The read-a-thon spans from July 1st to July 31st and is made up of 4 bingo-esque boards: the adult table, thrill ride, teenage dream, and family affair, which is, essentially, a total of 64 prompts. I couldn't decide between "The Adult Table" and "Thrill Ride", so I'm starting with a tentative and manageable selection of 11 books, 1 row/1 column from The Adult Table and 1 row from Thrill Ride. It's very possible that I'll be revisiting the other boards later on this year.

Without further ado, here are the prompts I'm going with for the Pop Culture Read-a-Thon:

The Adult Table (1st column + bottom row):

  1. Book written in verse: Clap When You Land – Elizabeth Acevedo
  2. Book with 150 pages or less: I Think I Might Love You – Christina C. Jones
  3. Book with a revenge plot: Sadie – Courtney Summers
  4. Next book in a series: Children of Virtue and Vengeance, book no.02 in the Legacy of Orisha series –Tomi Adeyemi ✔
  5. Romantic comedy: The Right Swipe – Alisha Rai ✔
  6. Action packed read: The Gilded Wolves - Roshani Chokshi
  7. Book with a colorful cover: Ship It – Britta Lundin ✔

Thrill Ride (top row):

  1. Book with a power-hungry character: Mexican Gothic – Silvia Moreno-Garcia
  2. Book set on an island/coast/body of water: Beach Read – Emily Henry ✔
  3. Book by one of your favorite authors: Maybe in Another Life – Taylor Jenkins Reid
  4. Dark academia: Ninth House – Leigh Bardugo ✔
